Long Exposure: Stillness and Motion

The theme for this photography project is Long Exposure: Stillness and Motion. I began this adventure with a fascination for long exposure images, particularly with regard to the way they capture motion. Standard portraiture or landscapes are generally crisp images that capture stillness, a frozen instant, and the seeming solidness of physical objects and bodies. Long exposure work, on the other hand, shows the progression of movement over a period of time. Physical solidness gives way to visual energy, fluidity, and spirit; nebulous trails of motion. Physics tells us that nothing is solid, all physical matter is a dance of energy. My goal here was to play with that idea by juxtaposing what we would call stillness and motion, animate and inanimate, the seemingly solid with the seemingly nebulous.

I have consciously avoided the cliché of shooting images of traffic with long exposure, and have instead pursued the ideal of images that offer something different. My love of this adventure ensures that I will be doing more of this work in the near future. I hope you enjoy these in the meanwhile....

Diptychs

Diptychs are a pair of images consisting of different subject matter with a common visual element of some kind, a visal parallel...

Diptych 1
This began with the image on the left, which I shot about a week before.
Then, I went to a local store and quietly arranged and photographed the feathered boas...

Diptych 2
Yes, indeed, a sunhat and a mushroom do look alike. Don't be surprised if you see a
garden faery dancing among dew laden leaves some morning, with a mushroom for a sunhat...

Diptych 3
Jungle gym and an umbrella. Structurally similar, but favor different weather!...

Diptych 4
A sculpture of sails at a playground looked irresistibly like snow shovels to me. I also like the
dichotomy between work and my elderly model with his snow shovel, versus play and a place
created especially for children...

Diptych 5
A compelling pairing, and one not lost on the history of religion and violence, unfortunately.
I pray for  faith to bring out the best in us, not the worst.

I hope you have enjoyed these pairings, and that they inspire you to see parallels, visually or conceptually, in the world around us. Everything is connected, in life and death.

Blessings,
Linda

Richmond Beach Treasures

Richmond Beach is a short drive from where I work, so I sometimes go there after spending all day in a room with no windows, to breathe the fresh air, soak in some natural light, and yes, take pictures. The images below were taken during two different visits, and comprise the park above the beach as well as the beach area itself. You never know what treasures you will find when you start consciously looking for them....

Silhouettes, on the Water Pt 1

I have been interested in shooting silhouettes since I experimented with a motion study, after sunset at Golden Gardens Park, several months ago. That shoot consisted of silhouettes of people-in-motion: walking, skating, bicycling, running, etc along the park path. It struck me at the time that these silhouettes could be anyone. When photographing people, the universal interests me more, in a sense, than the individual. I was struck by the thought of universal humanity once again, as I observed this young man, sitting on the rocks several yards away from me. He could be any one of us.

We are so often drawn to the water for its soothing and hypnotic influence, especially during times of deep reflection, brooding, questioning, and the many nuances of thought and feeling for which we have no ready labels. Water is home to us. We are told by science that life originally emerged from the sea, just as each human child born into our world today emerges from the salty water of the womb. Our bodies, our brains, our blood, are all largely water based. We cannot survive long without water. It is the elixir of life, on our planet. Small wonder that water also gives us pleasure, solace, and balance.

I have entitled the below images, "Thinking" and "Feeling" but these titles could be interchangeable, or they could be applicable-in-tandem, to both images. You decide...

Tibetan Cherry Tree Study (Prunus Serrula Tibetica)

I have been in love with the Tibetan Cherry Tree, or Prunus Serrula Tibetica, since I first saw one, at the Washington Park Arboretum. These pictures were taken in July 2012, at the Arboretum, one of my favorite places to explore and take pictures. I have such a backlog of photos to edit, I just got to these today! Hope you enjoy them...

Nature's Paintbox, Pt 1

Purple Tears
I love the way these delicate purple petals
landed on these beautiful leaves...

Purple at Heart
Nature's paintbox and creativity never
fail to amaze me...

Radiance Red & Green
Amazing the detailed patterns here...

Anthurium Blush
These plants have such lovely, shiny leaves...

Feathering Leaf
Leaves with leaf patterns within always
 fascinate me...

White Hydrangea
Multitudes of white petals....

Bromeliad Looking Skyward
Can't resist these beauties, leaves within leaves...

Beauty Marks
The raised bumps on these leaves remind me of
patterns of scarification that I have seen on the
faces and bodies of African citizens...

Pink Leaf Feather
It may be a leaf, but it looks like a gorgeous feather to me...

Blue Agave Cactus
This plant, about 2 feet wide,  is so beautiful
 in the late afternoon sunshine...

Turning the Sky
Which is real, the dark sky with stars above,
or the sunny sky below...

Shilshole Sunset over Breakwater III
Sky is smoky here from numerous wildfires in
Washington state

Thank you so much for stopping by to look at my photography! I hope it has lifted your spirit, and shone some of Nature's Light into your heart.

Linda

Recent Photos, with New Camera

Here are a selection of photos taken with my new Canon Rebel T3i, with 18-135mm lens:

Autumn's Emerging
A beautiful, quiet day at Golden Gardens Park, despite the smoke in the air,
from multiple, serious wildfires raging east of the mountains, in Washington...

Breakwater Sunset
Just after sunset, pier near the breakwater, at Golden
Gardens Park. I visit here often, especially at this
time of day...

Canadian Geese in a Row
I got quite a kick out of seeing these geese headed out into the Montlake Cut in a nearly perfect line. Taken
from the shore at the Washington Park Arboretum...

Canoe Silhouette
This shot fascinates me. I think it is because I love photographing people in
silhouette. They are anonymous, they could be anyone, that is the appeal for me...

Delicate Freckles
The light behind this orchid was so magical, it caught my
eye from the other side of the greenhouse. I love seeing
the veins, as well as the delicate freckles of this beauty...

Duck Silhouettes I
Here are two variations of this shot. In the first, their necks are tucked in.
Taken in a quiet little corner of the Washington Park Arboretum

Duck Silhouettes II
Here is the same pair of ducks looking a little more awake and alert...
Aware, no doubt,  of the person standing a few feet away, amidst nettles
 and mosquitos, wielding a camera...

Red Berries and Leaves
Can anyone identify this plant for me?
I love the emerging colors of Autumn, but I rarely
know the names of the plants that I meet.
I need a botanist to hang out with...

Roots II
I never pass this area without stopping to visit
and stare at this amazing network of roots, all
from one tree...

Warm Wood Layers
I was mesmerized by the beautiful warm hues and layers
of bark on this tree at a botanic garden in Shoreline.
Again, can anyone identify the name of this tree?

Smoky Sunset
As noted in the pictures near the top of this page, the smoke seen here
is from a series of raging wildfires East of the mountains. There is, at least
some small return, in beauty, for so much loss and devastation...

Thank you for stopping by! I hope you enjoy these. I hope to have many more images to share
next week.

Blessings,
Linda
